Building a Toad House

The next toad house was a trip to the Lowes we purchase a sandcastle in the garden department and a two inch diameter, 45 degree piece of plastic pipe from the plumbing department and hurried home with our goodies for building a toad house. It took my wife and me longer to decide where Mr. Toad’s castle was going to be than it did put it together. Create a shallow depression or ditch beside ferns, shrubs or flowers. Place the two inch diameter, 45 degree piece of plastic pipe on an angle and pack the loose dirt from your depression around the pipe to hold it into place. Next lay the Sand Castle over the depression or ditch acting as a roof of the shelter. The bottom of the Sand Castle is flat and solid acting as a roof of the shelter, covering the pipe doorway leaving only the two inch opening exposed.

We enjoyed building a toad house by our garage in the flowerbed. With all of the harmful insect and slugs that can damage a flower bed or garden a toad is a great way to combat these intruders. I know of very little that fights off slugs in the flower garden other than harmful pesticides. If you build Mr. Toad a home he will come. It was simple task of finding a few stones to use as a shelter for the toad and a two inch diameter piece of plastic pipe four to five inches long as a doorway for my first toad house. Create a shallow depression or ditch under ferns, shrubs or flowers. Place the two inch piece of pipe on an angle and pack the loose dirt from your depression around the pipe to hold it into place. Layer the stones over the depression or ditch acting as a roof of the shelter, covering the pipe doorway leaving only the two inch opening for Mr. Toad to enter exposed.
